How Leigh Centurions and Premier Sport Made a Difference...
Premier Sport have been working with Willow Grove Primary school since 2008, providing a broad range of opportunities to access sport and physical activity, both in and out of school every week. This partnership over the years has seen brilliant progress and in recent provision and quality reviews with the school we identified that to further enhance school improvement and progress of the children, that the agreed impact of our provision should be built around creating more opportunities for the children to access more competitive sports and activities.
In October of this year, Mr Clarke (Premier Sport Activity Professional) and Mr Carr (Willow Grove Teacher and PE & School Sport Subject Leader) identified the competitions they would like to enter the children into – in discussions with the children it was agreed that the school was to enter a team into the Wigan School Games Tag Rugby competition. The children practiced with Mr Clarke, and over the weeks learnt discipline, tactics, and most importantly, team work and performance – the children were very proud of their achievements and could not wait to represent the school in the upcoming event!
Because of all the hard work the children had put in, you can imagine they were extremely excited to showcase their skills. The team started the tournament and went all the way through the group stages UNBEATEN – however, because of rules of the competition, the children could not progress to the finals due to having the incorrect ratios of boys to girls.
The children were disappointed in not being able to progress further in the competition, so Mr Clarke, Mr Carr and the Premier Sport team came up with a plan of how we can still reward and celebrate their success - and that’s where Micky Higham of Leigh Centurions comes in!
Micky very kindly agreed to come and visit the children and reward them with their own individual medals for the progress and professional performance, and also speak to them about his career, motivating them to maintain and keep working hard towards their goals!
The children’s faces and positivity was really rewarding and pleasing to see, and it's safe to say the collaboration with the school, clubs and coaches has definitely inspired these group of children by providing them with a memorable experience they will never forget!
